Sparcraft Masts builds second mast for Farr 38 “Freedom” in 35 years

Royal Cape Yacht Club stalwart Dr CP van der Merwe recently commissioned Sparcraft Masts to build a new rig for his Farr 38, “Freedom”.

Our history with CP is a wonderful one that goes back 35 years, when our MD, Tich Mitchell, then at Bellamy Masts, manufactured and stepped CP’s original rig on Freedom.

CP had bought Freedom then from a gentleman called Colin Cooper who owned a company that was called Two Oceans Marine based in Epping, and the boat builder at the time was Jerry Caine. Jerry later partnered with John Robertson and form what is today Roberston and Caine today.

CP’s comment to Tich when he commissioned Sparcraft Masts to build his new rig was that he hoped it lasted him for another 35 years! Says Tich, “CP is a true gentleman and a great personality that has been a member of RCYC for as long as I can remember. What an absolute pleasure to build a second rig for him for Freedom.”
